First Steps in Choosing a significator

The idea is to choose a significator that best suits your nature. Start with the elements Earth, air, fire, water. Each (Sun) sign of the zodiac has a symbolic element. If you are Aries Leo or Sagittarius for example, you would choose Fire. See my color code for each card - orange for fire, blue for water etc. Find the element that goes with your sign. Then pick from the ones with your element that have a physical relevance - married (with or without children), adult (unmarried), or teen/child. Surely you will fit one of those categories. Don't worry that the general meaning of the card does not describe you. Those descriptions are based on the astrological sign. Supposedly one sign fits all - don't count on it. The purpose of sticking with a certain card is to prevent it from appearing in the spread. The reading is already about you. The remaining court cards may represent other persons around you and may give a clue what they're up to where you're concerned.

Advanced

As you get more advanced in your Tarot theory you may use or play extra cards on the court cards to get a clearer picture of the person symbolized by the card. Since you are already represented, the court card must pertain to someone you know or perhaps represents an unmet friend. Two to three extra cards should be sufficient to leave little doubt who the card represents. Do not play another court card on a mystery court card, this may only confuse you more.

Warner designs
Originally I designed the pages or page court cards as trumpets with banners, but for my internet set I chose saxophones because I don't play trumpet. For knights I use a clip art horse and knight, his sun-moon shield has been copied around the world, Queens I'm still working on an Anne of a 1000 days model, and Kings I'm switching from a Ridpath illustration of Tristan and Isolde to a more personal image.

Colors

The color symbolizes the elements:
water - emotion, love blue & aqua
fire - spirit, inspiration orange, red & maroon
Air - intellect, talking gray, white & black
earth - phys. materials yellow & green

Choosing a Significator card: (The card that symbolizes the querent.)
This is so that the card does not show in another part of the spread.

One generally chooses
pages - for babies, children, and early teens
knights - for late teens & young unmarried adults
Queens - for Mothers and mature women
Kings - for Fathers and mature men

Best advice: Base your choice more on elements & physical attributes than on signs.

Most Tarot advisors will choose a physical rather than an astrological Significator because of gender considerations. Another strategy is to compromise between gender and a close element, for example a male Scorpio may prefer a male water sign such as Knight or King of Cups. Listed below are the traditional choices.

Physical Significator

The Page of Cups: Light hair, fair complexion, male or female child.

The Page of Wands: Red hair, fair complexion, male or female child.
